Chapter Thirteen

Sienna

I had no idea why I ran from Solan. I didn’t mean to. His mouth sealed to my body, his fingers inside me — he’d given me the most intense orgasm of my life.

Maybe that’s why it scared me so much.

After Hank’s betrayal, I was wary of throwing myself at any man who showed interest in me. What if I was falling into the same trap? What if he wasn’t the man I thought he was?

Alone in our little hut, I breathed more easily. The solution was simple. I wouldn’t let myself be tied down to Solan. If things happened between us, then I would let them happen. But I was my own woman, and I wouldn’t allow a man to manipulate my feelings.

When I woke up the next morning, I took a moment to simply breathe in the security and relief I felt. I’d never been in a place that filled me with so much joy, not even my parents’ home. My sisters and I were safe for the first time, and it was amazing to see how well we fit into a society that I couldn’t have imagined living in before.

Natalie began working with the tribe’s scientist to help find a cure to the breeding problem they were having. Like always, she threw herself headlong into the work. I had no doubt she would come up with a solution, and it was so wonderful to see her working on something that actually held meaning.

Not to mention that she seemed interested in her research partner, Jorek. While she insisted that she was only spending time with him because of their work, there was a spark in her eye that I’d never seen before.

Arlynn was also thriving. Yara had taught her how to paint with plant dyes, and she was busy creating things from dawn till dusk. Even first thing this morning, she stood in front of her bed, staring at the wall.

“Hmm,” she mused, hands on her hips and head tilted.

“Oh no,” Natalie yawned. “I know what that sound means.”

“I have an idea,” Arlynn said.

“That’s what I was worried about.”

“I think we should make this place a little prettier. You know, spruce it up.”

I glanced around. While comfy, the hut was pretty bare.

“Sounds good,” I said.

“Great!” Arlynn spun around. “I’ve brought some paints for us. You can start on the base layer of paint for the mural, Sienna. And Natalie, you—”

“Tell you what, I’ll go find some plants to bring in here,” Natalie said. “As soon as I wake up.”

“Plants would be perfect,” I said quickly. Arlynn often had projects all planned out in her mind, but sometimes she had to be reined in a little. “Arlynn, show me what to get started on.”

She immediately put me to work applying the base color of the wall, and I tried not to let the paint drip all over the floor as I brushed it on with some kind of fluffy dried weed.

“So, what do you two think we’re going to do here?” I asked.
